Who is Chino Chow

I have been asked numerous times if my real name is Chino Chow. And the answer is YES!

People often associate my name with food, amused by the ring of it. It is a combination of different terms. And just like me, combination of different ethnicities.

My father intentionally named me after Don Chino Roces, a prominent Filipino figure, and paired it with our family name Chow, when you add both names, you would have a nice recall for a Chinese restaurant :p

I came from a family where food is the love language. You get a mix of Filipino and Chinese food, and an occasional servings of different cuisines. I am the grandson of Wong Yi aka Joe Chow of Dainty Restaurant in Baguio City, where he, alongside ahkong and other Cantonese cooks prepare the daily meals for the patrons.

This blog, though isn’t about cooking food alone; it is about appreciating meals prepared by individuals running restaurants, and simply those who have passed-on family recipes.

Food differs from all around the world. It tells us the story of how people live in certain parts. We get to taste their culture and tradition. While we get to taste diverse cuisines from new restaurants in our city, original taste comes from the place when we travel, and so I added travel features in this blog hoping to introduce unfamiliar flavors to our readers.

Aside from food and adventure (travel), I am introducing another feature which I hope would spark online attention to the arts.

I also came from a family of artists, my grandpa who had great interest in Chinese painting had a short formal courses when he was still in China. My father, founding member of Tahong Bundok who taught budding artists be comfortable with their chosen medium. An excellent watercolor and mixed media artist. And me… I normally experiment on different medium, from acrylic to ink to art installations. I have had several group exhibits but my favorite is when we had a father-and-son painting exhibit on October 2017 at the Baguio Museum. The first and unfortunately last with my dad.
